Bobby Junior Parson, age 62, died Wednesday May 16, 2001, at Emory University Hospital. Native of Banks County, Mr. Parson was a son of Cleo Arnold Parson and the late Henry Parson. Mr. Parson is survived by his wife, Verna Parson, Maysville; two sons, Lonnie Parson and Randall Parson, both of Homer; two daughtersm Sandra Carroll and Kathy Parson, both of Homer; two brothers, Hoyt Parson and Lloyd Parson, both of Homer; four sisters, Edna M. Powell, Barbara A. Trotter, Barbara Snipes and Lou J. Waddell, all of Homer. Burial was in the Silver Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. Abstracted from the Banks County News, May 23, 2001
Mr. Meriwether PARSONS, an old and respected citizen of this community, died at his home in the Poplar Springs district last Saturday and was laid to rest in the family burying ground on Sunday. Mr. Parsons was about seventy-five years old. He leaves one son, Mr. Rella Parsons, and many grandchildren to mourn his deathTranscribed from undated newspaper clipping which I believe is the Banks County Journal. The date I have found in other sources in 11/19/1906. Meriwether Parsons was a member of CSA CO A 24th Regt GA Volunteer Infantry-Army of Northern Virginia-"Independent Volunteers" from Banks County.

Martha Threlkeld Parsons 20 Feb. 1954 Mrs. Martha Threlkeld Parsons, 94, widow of C. E. Parsons, died at the residence of her grandson, C. P. Vaughn, following an extended illness. She was born in Madison County and was a member of Silver Shoals Baptist Church. Her husband preceeded her to the grave in 1921. Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon from Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, the Rev. George Collins officiating. Internment was in the Parsons cemetery. Sanders Funeral Directors were in charge of the arrangements. She is survived by a son, Joe H. Parsons of Maysville; and a daughter, Mrs. Maggie Parsons Vaughn of Commerce; 18 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren. Billy S. PATTON, 64, of Banks County, Homer, GA died
October 30, 2002. Mr. Patton was a veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded
in death by his parents, Homer and Ida Whirsel Patton. Survivors include son,
Greg Patton; sister, Pearlie Sorrels; grand-daughter. Funeral services were held
November 2, 2002 at Bethany Christian Church with the Rev. Tim Beasley officiating.
Interment was in the Bethany Christian Church Cemetery. Ivie Funeral Home of Commerce,

Ben Ace PAYNE, 96, of Banks County, Homer, GA died
April 22, 1971. Mr. Payne was born in Banks County, GA on February 17, 1875. Survivors
include nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held April 24, 1971 at Damascus
Baptist Church with the Rev. Lester Palmer officiating. Interment was in the Damascus
Baptist Church Cemetery. Ivie Funeral Home of Commerce, GA was in charge of the

Ralph PAYNE, 29, of the Damascus community in Banks
County, GA died December 30, 1952. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Caudell
Payne; children, Keith and Judy Payne; mother, Mrs. Lela Payne; sister, Mrs. Addie
Sue Ivie; brothers, Clyde, Carl, John Henry, Roy and Dorsey Payne. Funeral services
were held December 31, 1952 from the Damascus Church with the Rev. Joe Brown officiating.
Interment was in Tate Creek Cemetery. McGahee Funeral Home was in charge of the

Roy PAYNE, 83, of Banks County, Homer, GA died November
6, 2002. The son of the late John and Byrd Hope Payne, he was born July 20, 1919.
Mr. Payne was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Payne; nieces, Carolyn Harris
and June Patton; nephew, Ralph Griffin. Survivors include his wife, Irma Griffin
Payne; daughters and sons-in-law, Lynn and Gary Whitfield, Carol and Steve Ayers,
Penny and Darrel McMahan; sister, Julia Williams; brothers, Guy and William Payne.
Funeral services were held on November 9, 2002 at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist
Church in Homer, GA. Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church

Sallie Duckett PERKINS, 88, of Cornelia, GA died April
13, 1976. A native of Banks County, GA, Mrs. Perkins was the daughter of the late
Seaborn and Louise Cash Duckett. She was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. Surviving
are sons, Tom, Robert, Bynum and Swenson Perkins; daughters, Mrs. Henry Turk,
Miss Louise Perkins, Major Sally M. Perkins, Miss Dixie Perkins and Mrs. John
J. O'Connell; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services were held April
14, 1976 at Harmony Baptist Church with Dr. J. Emmett Henderson and Rev. J. Frank
Sailers officiating. Interment was in the Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery. Whitfield-Perkins
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Addie Lee Payne PEYTON, 73, of Alto, GA died September
26, 1972. A lifelong resident of Banks County, GA she was a daughter of the late
Frank and Sara Whitfield Payne. She was a member of the Damascus Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ranilus Peyton; daughters, Mr. O. W. Thompson and
Mrs. Charles Weaver; brother, Howard Payne; sisters, Mrs. Otis Dalton, Mrs. Lula
Peyton, and Mrs. Inez Moss. Funeral services were held on September 27, 1972 at
the Line Baptist Church with the Revs. Pledger Dodd and Lester Palmer officiating.
Interment was in the Line Baptist Church Cemetery. McGahee Funeral Home was in

Benjamin Sterling PEYTON, 77, died August 10, 1964
in Banks County, Homer, GA. Mr. Peyton was born in Banks County, GA the son of
the late Henry H. and Nancy Jordan Peyton. He was a member of the Line Baptist
Church. Survivors include wife, Ella Mae Hill Peyton; daughter, Grace Peyton;
brothers, the Rev. Hollis Peyton and W. R. Peyton; sisters, Mrs. Averne Wilson,
Mrs. J. T. Brock and Mrs. Lona Massey. Funeral services were held August 12, 1964
at the Line Baptist Church with the Pledger Dodd and the Rev. Wade H. Lord officiating.

Enos PEYTON, 51, died in Atlanta, GA on August 25,
1943. He was survived by a wife, five children, Bruce, Loyd and Doris Peyton,
Mrs. Bob Maney and Mrs. Guy Forrester; sisters, Mrs. J. T. Brock, Mrs. G. D. Massey
and Mrs. Avaline Wilson; brothers, Leonidas, Sterling, W. R. and Rev. Hollis Peyton.
He was interred at the Line Cemetery on August 28, 1943.
Grace Lucille PEYTON, 74, of Homer, GA died October
17, 1990. Born in Banks County, GA she was a daughter of the late Sterling and
Ella Hill Peyton. She was a member of the Line Baptist Church. Funeral services
were October 18, 1990 at the McGahee-Griffin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev.
Gary Garrison officiating. Interment was in the Line Baptist Church Cemetery.

Jerry Lee PEYTON, 41, of Banks County, Homer, GA,
died May 26, 2000, in Hall County, Gainesville, GA. Mr. Peyton was born July 17,
1958, a son of Geneva Peyton and the late Rudolph Peyton. In addition to his mother,
Mr. Peyton is survived by one brother, Michael Peyton. Funeral services were held
May 28, 2000, at Silver Shoals Baptist Church. Burial was in the Silver Shoals
Baptist Church Cemetery.

born in Banks County, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. H. Peyton.

S. Peyton, Hollis Peyton, Mrs. J. T. Brock, Mrs. G. D. Massey, W. R. Peyton; sister,

William Ranilus PEYTON, 86, of Alto,
GA died October 8, 1985. Born in Banks County, GA he was a son of the late Henry
and Nancy Jordan Peyton. He was a member of Line Baptist Church. Survivors include
daughters, Mrs. Charles Weaver and Mrs. Thelma Thompson; sister, Mrs. Lora Brock;
grandchild; great-grandchild. Funeral services were held October 9, 1985 at

FRANCES PHILLIPS Mrs. Frances Newsome Phillips 57, of Marietta, passed away Friday, January 10, 1996. She was born in Banks County, GA on January 1, 1939, a daughter of the late George Emory Newsome and Ruth Naomi Newsome Kaiser. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Cecil Phillips. She is survived by daughters, Belinda Jean Garner, Theresa Newton, Marietta; sisters, Virginia Karolyi, Acworth, Betty Jean Reynolds, Marietta, Eva Brown, Snellville; brother, Noah Eugene Newsome, Doraville; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild. Alice Vaughn POOLE, 89, of Stephens County, Toccoa,
GA October 1, 1979. Born in Banks County, GA she was a daughter of the late Joseph
E. and Lodena Martin Vaughn. She was a member of Lamar Christian Church. In addition
to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter L. Poole. Survivors
include sons, Ray, Roy, Mabry and Morris Poole; brothers, Elmer, Eugene, Owen
and Ernest Vaughn; grandchildren; great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held
on October 3, 1979 at the Hillcrest Chapel of Acree-Davis Funeral Home with the
Revs. Ben Blake and Donald Holbrooks officiating. Interment was in Prospect Methodist

Dewey Thomas POOLE, 84, of Commerce, GA died December
23, 2001. A native of Banks County, GA, Mr. Poole was the son of the late Lucy
Sorrow and Henry Clay Poole. He was a member of Charity Baptist Church. He was
preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Gordon Poole. Survivors include daughter,
Jeanette Caudell; sister, Fannie Walker; grandchildren; great-grandchildren. Services
were December 24, 2001 at the graveside in Jackson Memorial Gardens with the Rev.
Vaughn Howington officiating.
Emory Clarence POOLE, 50, of Anderson, SC died August
16, 1985. Born in Banks County, GA he was a son of William French and Lois English
Poole. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by
his father, W. F. Poole. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife,
Joanne Dalrymple Poole; sons, Keith Emory and Phillip Wayne Poole; daughter, Michelle
Poole; brothers, Marvin Dwayne and Jesse Poole. Funeral services were held August
18, 1985 at Hopewell Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Stone and Earl Mosteller

31, 2001. Mr. Poole was born in Banks County, Homer, GA on October 2, 1938, a

Harold Poole, 54, of Kings Mountain, N. C., died Feb. 12 (1984) after
a brief illness. Services were held in Kings Mountain, N. C. A native of Banks
County, he was a son of Lois English Poole and the late French Poole of Homer.
He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church. He is survived by his mother;
wife Frances; three children; three brothers, Emory and Dwayne of S. C.; Jesse
of Toccoa; and 2 grandchildren.
James Wilson POOLE, 85, of Baldwin, GA died February
27, 1982. Born in Banks County, GA he was a son of the late William and Julia
Lord Poole. He was a member and deacon of Union Hill Baptist Church. In addition

1988. Born in Banks County, GA she was the daughter of the late Noah Washington

include sons, Jesse Terrell and Marvin Dwayne Poole; sister, Mrs. Swain (Allene)

Oscar Allen POOLE, 68, died November 3, 1974 in Stephens
County, Toccoa, GA. The son of the late Freeman W. and Emma Acree Poole, he was
a native of Banks County and moved to Toccoa from Alma 15 years ago. He was a
member of Toccoa Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Poole;
daughters, Mrs. Faye Moore and Mrs. Lynn H. Cash; son, Royce Poole; sisters, Mrs.
Robert Randall, Mrs. Sara Murray, and Mrs. Ernest Sellers; brothers, Buford and
George T. Poole; grandchildren. Revs. Charles Taylor, Don Smith and Gene Powers
conducted services at Toccoa Creek Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery.

Sallie Osborn POOLE, 67, of the Carnes Creek community
died February 10, 1960. She was a member of the Carnes Creek Baptist Church. Born
in Banks County, GA on July 30, 1892 she was a daughter of the late J. B. and
Nancy Vaughn Osborn. Survivors include her husband, Luther Poole; sons, Swain
and Reeves Poole; daughters, Mrs. Bill Meeks, Mrs. Bill Hallford, Mrs. Owen Goode
and Mrs. Haskell Whitt; brothers, Robert, Burt and Richard Osborn; grandchildren.
Funeral services were held February 12, 1960 at the Carnes Creek Baptist Church
with the Rev. John Strickland, the Rev. John Moore and the Rev. Jack Ragan officiating.

Veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Moss Poole;
grandchildren, Shea Marie and Tom Joseph Poole; brother, J. D. Poole; sisters,

Jerry Williams PRUITT, 57, died August 26, 2001. A
native of Banks County, Mr. Pruitt was a son of the late James W. and Virginia
Poole Pruitt. He was a member of Union Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include
his wife, Louise Bell Pruitt; sisters, Carolyn Eckstein, Mildred Pruitt, Chris
Dietrich and Marion Gasaway; brother, James Pruitt; nieces and nephews. Funeral

Ray M. Pruitt, 85, died Tuesday, October 2, 2001, at his residence. A native of Banks County, Mr. Pruitt was born October 9, 1915, a son of the late Clarence and Faye Ray Pruitt. He was a U. S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Mr. Pruitt was a member of New Salem United Methodist Church, Commerce, and a member of the Homer American Legion. He was preceded in death by a brother, C. W. Pruitt, and a sister, Helen Stewart. Mr. Pruitt is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Hill Pruitt, Commerce; son and daughter in law, Milton and Sharon Pruitt, Commerce; and sister, Mary Johnson, Carrollton. Jessie Lou PUCKETT, 91, died April 21, 2001. She was
preceded in death by parents, George F. & Nellie Baxter Harris; brothers, Bobby
& Terrell Harris. Funeral services were April 21, 2001 at Bernstein Funeral Home
Chapel in Athens, GA. Interment was in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Funeral
arrangements were by Bernstein Funeral Home of Athens, GA.
Ovis Wilkinson PUTNAM, 71, died October 25, 1984.
Born in Banks County, GA she was a daughter of the late Knox and Emmaline Martin
Wilkinson. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. In addition to her parents
she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Putnam. Survivors include daughters,
Mrs. Janis Wilson and Mrs. Sherron Wilson; sisters, Mrs. Dorcas Payne and Mrs.
Ann Caudell; brothers, Gordon, Mack, Shelton, Roger, Allen and Zack Wilkinson;
grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held October 27, 1984
at Ebenezer Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Lodge and the Rev. Roy Melton officiating.
Pallbearers included Leon, Bobby, Kenneth and Warren Wilkinson, J. C. and Wayne
Caudell. Interment was in Stephens Memorial Gardens. Whitlock Mortuary was in
charge of the arrangements.
