TY COBB
TY COBB, legendary baseball player was born in Banks County on December 18, 1886. Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the son of William Herschel Cobb and Amanda Chitwood who were married in Banks County on 11 Feb., 1886. His father taught school at The Line Church. The family moved to Royston, Franklin County, Georgia, in 1893, where W. H. H. Cobb was a schoolteacher, principal, newspaper publisher, state senator, and county school commissioner. In 1905, Amanda Cobb fatally shot her husband outside her bedroom window. It was thought she mistook him for an intruder. Ty Cobb reached the major leagues at age 18, with the Detroit Tigers. He possessed fierce resolve and determination to excel, batting over 300 for twenty-four consecutive years, three of which he hit over 400. In 1936 Ty Cobb was inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. Ty Cobb was the first ball player to star in a movie, a drama by Grantland Rice, "Somewhere in Georgia".
Ty Cobb invested his money wisely, in real estate and securities as well as in Coca-Cola stock. In 1950 he donated $100,000.00 toward the construction of a modern twenty-four bed hospital in Royston. The Cobb Memorial Hospital was dedicated to the glory of God and in loving memory of William Herschel and Amanda Cobb.
Ty Cobb died of cancer at the age of 74 on July 17, 1961 and was placed to rest in the family mausoleum at Rose Hill Cemetery in Royston. His wealth was estimated to be as much as $12 million dollars.
