Notes for Jedediah Garrison, Jr.:

NOTE: Jr. is added to Jedediah's Name to Seperate Him from His GRANDFATHER, Jedediah GARRISON. Some Researchers inserted "Judge" into his name also, Reason Unknown).

NOTE: According to some Garrison Researchers, Jedediah GARRISON was a mule trader. Jedediah would be away from home for long periods of time, selling or trading his mules. Jedediah made several trips to Dahlonega, Georgia, and had lots of friends there, as well as regular customers who had livery stables. During the "GOLD RUSH" there, mules were in great demand and sold at a good price.

In the mid 1840's, Jedediah took a large string of mules to Dahlonega, and his friend who owned a large livery stable in town bought them all. His friend, not having enough cash on him at the time, was to finish paying Jedediah the following day. Jedediah was to spend the night at a local Inn in Dahlonega. Thw next day Jedediah did not show up at the livery stable to collect the rest of his money. Thinking that Jedediah may have been the victim of foul play, the friend reported it to the local officials, and found out that several other persons had also come up missing during the last few days.

Knowing that Jedediah would not just up and leave town, the livery stable owner organized a party of men to check out the surrounding area. A few days later a saddle was found covered with brush near a small lake. The stable owner recognized the saddle as being Jedediah's, from carvings on the underside of it. Jedediah, like the other missing men, had been robbed and MURDERED, and probably weighed down and thrown into the lake. The person or persons responsible for the MURDERS were never apprehended.

NOTE: In the Spring of 1804, Jedediah Garrison and His Family Moved from South Carolina to Franklin County, Georgia, in the Area that is Now Banks County, Georgia. (Banks County was Created from Franklin County in 1858).

Jedediah and Jane had Six-Sons and Two-Daughters. (NOTE: This can be VERIFIED by the 1790 South Carolina Census). Two of the Sons Married Morgan Sisters. Two-Sons and a Daughter Married Meaders. Jane Garrison Married Barney Meaders. They Moved from North Carolina to South Carolina, and then to Franklin County, Georgia where they lived near the MEADERS Family.

Jedediah Garrison fought in the Revolutionary War, against the "TORRIES", (the British), and in 1827 he drew Lee County Land Grant in the "Land Lottery". It was granted to him on December 21, 1833.

Mt Pleasant Methodist Church near Homer Georgia, in Banks County, was organized by Jedediah Garrison, and two of his sons, David and Levi. Both David and Levi were Methodist Ministers. Levi returned to South Carolina and preached on a Circuit for ten years. Levi also built and operated the first cotton mill in South Carolina, on the Seneca River in Anderson District.

Jedediah, Christopher, and other family members are buried at Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church Cemetery in Banks County. In 1989 a marker was placed on Jedediah's grave by the D. A. R., (Daughters of the American Revolution), and the VA, (Veterans Administration), stating that he was a Revolutionary Soldier.

Jedediah Garrison is listed on the 1790 Census of South Carolina, and in the County "DEED" Books of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Franklin County, Georgia, showing the amount of land he owned and where located.

At thr foot of the tomb (supposedly Jedediah's, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, near Homer, Georgia), there is a rectangular bronze marker, placed there by Frankie GARRISON SHIPMAN, long after hia death. Grave marker has dates 1748-1829. Actually no one knoes for sure which is Jedediah's grave - it is a token marker. (The dates listed are not correct, Should be 1752-1830, according to his obituary).

The following obituary was printed in the April 9, 1830 issue of a Newspaper entitled "Christian Advocate and Journal and Zion's Herald".

"Mr. Jedediah Garrason departed this Life in Franklin County, Georgia, March 3, 1830, in the 78th year of His age, He was born in North Carolina of English Parents in 1752. In 1786, He embraced religion under the ministry of Mr. Patridge, and some time after, He removed to South Carolina, where He became a Class leader and exhorter, both of which offices He filled with much fidelity and usefulness. After some years, He removed to Georgia, where he spent the remainder of His days in the discharge of His duties to God and man. He wasted away slowly with a lingering disease, but His Faith was made perfect. A little before He died, He praised God for all his Mercies, and said the ministering Spirits were waiting to convey Him home. His Death indeed was truly triumphant, affording a striking evidence to all who behold it of the efficacy and power of divine grace.

Generation No. 6

32. James Garrason/Garretson, born in New Castle, Delaware; died in North Carolina. He married 33. UNKNOWN.

33. UNKNOWN

Notes for James Garrason/Garretson:

OUR "GARRISON FAMILY" ANCESTORS ORIGINATED IN THE "KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS" (NEDERLANDS), located in Western Europe bordering the North Sea and between Belgium and Germany, and are of "DUTCH" Decent.

Lysbeth HENDRIKSX (son) was the FIRST known Family Member in the New World. She first Married Garret JANSZ (sen) in the Netherlands. LYSBETH arrived in New Amstel, Later NEW CASTLE, Delaware on the Ship "D" Vos, (The Fox), on August 31, 1662. She was Listed on the Manifest (Passenger Lists), signed by Captain Jacob Jansz HUYS. Her First Son, Jan (John) GARRETSON was Already in New Amstel,(later called New Castle), and Her two youngest sons accompanied her, BUT were too young to be paying passengers. New Castle Records identified them as "CADETS".

The "FIRST GENERATION" of our GARRISON Ancestors in the New World were:

Lysbeth (Elizabeth) HENDRIKSX (Son)

To UNDERSTAND how the "GARRISON" name came about, you first have to know about the Dutch Naming System. The DUTCH, along with the Sweeds, the Russians, and a few others used the PATRONYMIC Naming System, which means (Named for the Father).

When the BRITISH took over the Dutch and Sweedish Settlements in Delaware, They Demanded that the PATRONYMIC Naming STOP, and Froze all Last Names in effect at that time, (Mainly, to simplify their Civil Record Keeping).

Although the DUTCH were forbidden to use their particular naming system, most of them continued to do so in private--therefore you will find, say, a 1729 DELAWARE "WILL" (Probated in 1733) of John HUSSEY, that states "My beloved brother GARRET GARRETSON". When checking public records, especially WILLS, genealogist run into BiG Time Problems, because in their public records, sometimes they noted a relative with a "Private Name" and sometimes with a "Public Name".

The DUTCH did not originally have surnames, but instead they used a naming system in which the father's first name became the child's last name. When the father's first name was used as a last name, many times a suffix was added to the father's first name to indicate "Son Of" or "Daughter OF". (EXAMPLE: Jan, son of Hendrick would be written Jan Hendricks, Jan Hendricjse, or Jan Hendricksen). NOTE the suffixes "s", "se", and "sen". WOMEN many times had a feminine form of suffix such as :s", "se", "sd", or "sdr", meaning "daughter of". (EXAMPLE: Jannetje Dirksdr would be Jane, the daughter of Dirk (Richard).

DUTCH NAMING of BOYS:

The "first" son is named after his "PATERNAL" grandfather.

Eric, son of John, who was the son of Tim would become Eric Tims/Timse/Timsen.

The "second" son is named after his "MATERNAL" grandfather.

Robert, the son Gertha, who was the daughter of Jan, would become Robert Jans/Janse/Jansen.

The "third" son is named after his Father's "PATERNAL" grandfather.

Jurat, the son of John, who was the son of Tim, who was the son of Johan, would become Jurat Johans/Johanse/Johansen.

The "fourth" son is named after his Mother's "PATERNAL" grandfather.

Henry, the son of Gertha, who was the daughter of Jan, who was the son of Henry would become Henry Henrys/Henryse/Henrysen.

DUTCH NAMING of GIRLS:

The "First" daughter is named after her "MATERNAL" grandmother.

The "second" daughter is named after her "PATERNAL" grandmother.

The "third" daughter is named after her Mother's (MATERNAL" grandmother.

The "fourth" daughter is named after her Father's "MATERNAL" grandmother.

The girls surnames were their fathers first name, followed by a suffix (sd or sdr for girls), as their last name. (That's why the BRITISH hated the Dutch naming system).

There were Several CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN born from the Above Listed Three (3) Male "GARRETSON" GRANDCHILDREN of GARRET and LYSBETH who were named "JAMES", John, Thomas and-so-on, and it is NOT Known (PROVEN) which of these James GARRETSON's was "OUR" James GARRETSON, who fathered JEDEDIAH and ISAIAH.

BUT, we do know that James GARRETSON Migrated to Carteret and Duplin Counties in North Carolina with a Brother, John GARRETSON, and a Cousin Thomas GARRETSON, where they all began to spell their last name GARRASON.

The Sons of Thomas GARRETSON/GARRASON kept the GARRASON Name spelling, BUT the Sons of James GARRASON, (JEDEDIAH, Born in 1752), and ISAIAH, changed their Name spelling first to GARRATSON, and then to GARRISON. They began to use GARRISON in their Public and Civil Papers and Documents.

In 1752, James GARRASON was in Carteret County, North Carolina and was Listed on Colonel LOVICH's Militia Roll, under the Command of Moses HOUSTON, (The Grandfather of Sam HOUSTON), of later TEXAS fame. In the Colonial Muster of Carteret County, North Carolina, Thirty-nine (39) of the Ninety-three (93) men listed were formally from DELAWARE.

The "TAX LISTS" from Early Orange County, North Carolina lists the GARRISON Brothers as living on adjoining land in Orange County. JEDEDIAH and his brother ISAIAH GARRISON lived a few miles from their Cousins, the sons of Garret GARRASON, formally of DELAWARE. ALL Eight (8) Jedediah's eight Children were born in North Carolina, BEFORE he moved to South Carolina.

Sometime After 1786, Greenville, County, South Carolina opened up for Settlement, and Jedediah GARRISON and his family moved to the GREENVILLE DISTRICT in South Carolina. In 1790, JEDEDIAH GARRISON was living near the Reedy River, several miles Southeast of Modern Greenville, South Carolina.

*****NOTE***** FIRST: Some people (Usually following "Family Tradition") WITHOUT any Research, CLAIM that FIVE (5) GARRISON BROTHERS arrived in Delaware from SCOTLAND about 1700. PROFESSIONAL RESEARCHERS have Searched Public Records and have found NO Evidence of GARRISON ever being a Scottish name.

HOWEVER, Their were GARRETSON's/GARRATSON's living in DELAWARE Long Before 1700, who had arrived from HOLLAND.

A SECOND MISTAKE/ERROR: The Christopher GARRISON from New York/New Jersey that some people Claim is the Father of JEDEDIAH was NOT born until 1730/1731, SO HOW CAN HE BE ONE OF FIVE BROTHERS WHO ARRIVED FROM SCOTLAND ABOUT 1700??? There is ALSO NO Evidence that the Christopher GARRISON from New York/New Jersey Ever Left that area. He is NOT Found in ANY North Carolina or South Carolina PUBLIC RECORDS.
